Making bath bombs is simple and fun to do.
In this blog article, we explain the best way to make bath bombs.
This way, you will have wonderfully scented bath bombs for your bath or foot bath in no time.
It is also great fun to do with your children.
Bath bombs can be made with:
- essential oil
- baking soda
- cornstarch
- nourishing oils
- citric acid
They can be made in beautiful shapes, and a lovely color can be added to the bath bomb using food coloring. When the bath bomb is used in the bath, it then gives the bath water a beautiful color. You can choose any color you like: from romantic red bath bombs to cool blue or green bath bombs.
You need the following things to make bath bombs:
Ingredients
(enough for a silicone mold of 12 pieces (e.g. hearts, circles) or 6 mini cupcake molds or bath bombs.)
- 100 grams baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) (baking soda)
- 50 grams citric acid
- 20 grams cornstarch
- 20 grams cocoa butter (for chocolate lovers), coconut oil, or another base oil as described below
- 20 grams shea butter
- 50 drops essential oil (to taste)
- Food coloring (optional): 2 – 6 drops depending on the strength of the color.

Kitchen utensils
- A large and a small glass bowl
- A wooden or plastic spoon
- A whisk
- Thin rubber gloves if you have sensitive skin; the citric acid can cause a slight sting if you have small wounds
- Molds
Optionally, dried flowers or flower petals such as roses, lavender, chamomile, or marigold.
Making bath bombs:
- Put on the gloves and get the supplies ready
- Stir sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, cornstarch, and 2 to 6 drops of food coloring in the bowl until there are no lumps left.
- Mix the essential oil, the food coloring, and the vegetable oil in another bowl. Preferably use shea butter, coconut oil, or cocoa butter. Water-based dyes do not mix with oil and will leave speckles in the bath bombs; if this is the desired effect, that is of course also possible.
- Add the oil mixture from point 3 to the other mixture from point 2. Knead into a sandy dough. Wear gloves for this if you have sensitive skin. It may fizz a little here and there, but that only makes it more fun to do. This does not affect the final result. You can also add dried flowers if desired. (For example, you can use dried lavender or roses for this.)
- Press the mixture firmly into a mold. Use different shapes for this. These can be baking molds or small bowls.
Form balls, press down as firmly as possible, and let them dry on baking paper. - Let the molds dry for 24 to 48 hours in a cool, dry place.
- Push them out of the molds or unscrew the bowls from a bath bomb and store them in a sealable jar.

Why do you use citric acid in bath bombs?
Citric acid has a soothing effect and functions as an acidity regulator and mild exfoliant.
It provides the effervescent effect in the bath bombs.
So you cannot leave out this ingredient.
Why use cornstarch in the bath bombs?
The cornstarch ensures that the bath bombs stay together well.
Other base oils to make bath bombs with are:
- Sweet Almond oil
- Grape seed oil
- Eucalyptus Mint massage oil
Due to the base by adding oils to the bath bombs, the bath bombs are more nourishing for the skin.
Essential oils combine
Also try combining different essential oils in the bath bombs to get a different kind of bath bomb. For example, you can combine Lavender well with Orange oil. Or you can use our ready-made Spring mix. In the summer, you can also mix Lemon oil with Mint oil or Peppermint oil, or use our Summer mix.
A number of these ingredients are also suitable for making the whipped shea butter.
